Dr. Maia S. McCuiston was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, and pursued her undergraduate education at Spelman College. She then attended Wayne State University School of Medicine, where she obtained her M.D. and completed her training in general pediatrics at the University of Michigan. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she has worked in a variety of healthcare settings, assuming multiple roles, including physician executive in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Currently, she serves as the owner and CEO of The McCuiston Group Pediatrics & Lactation, a pediatric practice located in Washington, DC.

In addition to her medical career, Dr. McCuiston is a dedicated philanthropist, actively contributing to the communities where she lives and works. In 2015, she became a Society member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, reflecting her commitment to cultural preservation and education. She is also an Honor Society member of College Bound, a Washington, DC-based organization focused on mentoring and supporting students in their educational journeys.

Her advocacy for underrepresented minorities in medicine has been a cornerstone of her career, beginning during her medical education. This passion led to her appointment as a board member of ElevateMed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing physician workforce diversity, closing the gap of financial inequity in medical education, and empowering future physician leaders. In 2024, Dr. McCuiston extended her influence by serving on Sanofi’s Type 1 Diabetes advisory board, further demonstrating her commitment to advancing healthcare and diversity initiatives. She is dedicated to universal screening for Type 1 diabetes in all children.
