The Web site Walk Score has named Washington America's seventh most walkable city. Walk Score, a site that defines its mission as promoting more walkable neighborhoods, is a product of the environmental nonprofit Sightline Institute. Walk Score ranked us behind other big cities, with New York City taking the lead spot. The other cities that beat out Washington, in order, are San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Seattle. When Walk Score first published rankings in 2008, San Francisco nabbed the top spot.
The site ranked Washington with an overall walkability rating of 73.2 percent. By comparison, New York's score was 85.3. Walk Score calculates a ranking of America's 100 biggest cities based on a combination of population density and geographic area. You can read more about their methodology here.
