Where & When: What to Do Tonight

A renowned poet, a fashion show, and a night of jazz

POETRY: The Library of Congress is hosting a free reading by W.S. Merwin, US poet laureate and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. A reception follows the reading, during which Merwin will sign copies of his work. 7 PM.

BENEFIT: Labels of Love and Cancer Schmancer are hosting the Modus Union Fashion Show at the Yards Park. There will be a runway show, a tribute to the late Elizabeth Edwards, and an appearance by actress and Cancer Schmancer president Fran Drescher. 6:30 to 10. Purchase tickets ($75) at the event’s site; proceeds go toward cancer research and awareness.

ART: Take in a bit of film history at Artisphere this month. A special exhibit on Scopitones—also known as “film jukeboxes” and often credited as MTV’s precursor—will be projected on the wall through May 31. Free.

JAZZ: Starting at 5:30, the University of Maryland’s three jazz bands will perform an outdoor concert. The Jazz Lab Band, the Jazz Ensemble, and the University Jazz Band each has its own take on the genre. Outside the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center; free.
