Burger Brackets: Good Stuff Eatery vs. Elevation Burger

Welcome to Burger Brackets, where we ask you to vote to discover the best burger in Washington. Today's face-off is...

Published Thursday, March 05, 2009

Who makes the best burger in Washington? We're holding a March Madness-style, bracketed face-off to find out. Check back every day at 10 AM and 2 PM for continuing burger vs. burger competitions. And don't forget to vote for your favorites!

Honestly, yesterday's morning burger face-off wasn't even a contest. It was more like a supreme smackdown from  Five Guys to Fuddruckers. Sorry, Fudd—with only 35%, you're out. Five Guys advances to the next round.

Today's face-off? Check below.

Good Stuff Eatery: Owned by former Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn, this Capitol Hill hangout crafts thin, compact burgers with creative toppings.

Elevation Burger: It's the the fast food joint with a conscience (Grass-fed beef! Fries cooked in olive oil!).

Who do you think makes the best burger between these two spots? Vote below, and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments as well. And you can still vote on the Ray's Hell Burger vs. Z Burger face-off; that poll goes until 2 PM today.

I grew up on a beef farm ... coming to the city Elevation Burger is awesome!! First time I can have a hamburger and it taste like the beef I grew up with. Just talking about it now makes me hungry for one of their double burgers :)

I’ve tried many MANY burger places in the area and NOTHING compares to elevation burger!! i worked next store for most of last year and NEVER got sick of eating there. yummmmmy!!!!!

I cannot wait for Elevation to hit the NJ market. Hurry and get here. GREAT BURGERS!!

Posted by: Debbie, Mar 26, 2009 07:52:54 AM

Elevation Burger is by far the best hamburger restaurant out there. The burgers are perfectly cooked, tender, juicy ... and the fries stand alone - nobody can match them. As others have commented, the milk shakes are ’to die for.’ EB employees take great pride in their work. EB gets my vote.

Posted by: C. Dickens, Mar 24, 2009 08:41:21 AM

Great food, great staff, great idea! EB get’s my vote for sure!

Posted by: Marie, Mar 24, 2009 08:30:25 AM

just horrible organic burgers. Why even bother be organic anyway....stick with whole wheat soy bean burgers, would make better sense.

Posted by: halvo, Mar 23, 2009 08:49:42 PM

While in the DC area we stopped at Elevation Burger. The 1/2 guilt burger ( 1/2 organic grass fed meat 1/2 veg burger was a delight. The fries were great and the milk shake rock n rolled!

Elevation Burger is the best!

Posted by: Maria Mandle, Mar 06, 2009 03:05:11 PM

Looks like elevation burger has a fan mailing list!

They are both good burgers. Elevation is a bit more expensive then Good Stuff, so i am going to have to go with Good stuff over Elevation, because i value my money over my health

that and it is way easier for me to get to!

Posted by: Craig, Mar 05, 2009 09:33:57 PM

Elevation Burger is my favorite. Great burger, great taste... and I love the fries. If all fast food places could be this good.

Posted by: Jay, Mar 05, 2009 04:59:40 PM

The first time i went to Elevation Burger I was upset because I didn’t understand that they cook to order. But once i got my burger, wow!!! We are so lucky in Falls Church to have Elevation Burger!!!

Dude, Hanibalto, the things that you are discounting as reasons to choose one burger over another are in fact be the exact things people use to determine what makes the best burger. Words and phrases synonymous with best are excellence, highest quality, advantageous, and desirable. When I’m choosing a hamburger place why wouldn’t I take into account its value, health benefit, and atmosphere?

I’m not one to jump on large bandwagons, but I simply like the taste of EB. This isn’t a comment "plant" or whatever people are calling all this. It’s simply taste, and clearly many people are agreeing that EB is good. To each his own right? It’s ok if it’s not for you. But there’s certainly no room for speculation on what it MIGHT be like to those who haven’t tried it yet... get out there and try it for yourself.

And, valid point about wanting a location near you, AJP. But even 5 Guys started in Alexandria. Every company starts somewhere. And I’m sure one day Elevation will make it’s way into the city. I think they already have plans to put one in the harbor.

Also the shakes rock! best around

If you HEARD a rumor, then you didn’t have the intellegence to try it yourself. It is the BEST and spreading like wildfire. I am from Msssachusetts and found it to be great. You can’t find a healthier burger on the market... Thanks Elevation, WE LOVE YOU!!!

Posted by: Lynette, Mar 05, 2009 02:59:21 PM

I haven’t been to elevation, but good stuff’s burgers are like a good fast-food burger. Their fries and dipping sauce are awesome, but their burgers are always well done (even if you ask for them medium rare) and ho-hum.

Posted by: Joey Jo Jo, Mar 05, 2009 02:52:07 PM

These comments look more and more like plants for Elevation.

Posted by: Adam, Mar 05, 2009 02:43:36 PM

Omg! I LOVEEEEEEE ELEVATION burger! Best everything! There is no point missing here! It’s healthy organic and tastes GREAT! Best Burger! Get’s MY vote!

Posted by: Jen, Mar 05, 2009 02:26:44 PM

elevation is sicker than my grandpa

Posted by: wu, Mar 05, 2009 12:59:10 PM

Some people seem to be missing the point: The competition is for the BEST burger, not which burger is the best value, or is the healthiest, or has the lowest carbon footprint, or which restaurant has the most comfortable chairs, or the best fries, or the cutest counter-help. Geez.

Posted by: hanibalto, Mar 05, 2009 12:54:09 PM

Of all the burger places around, Elevation Burger is certainly one of them.

Elevation is by far a better burger. Not only in taste but in value. I so want GSE to be good, since it’s less than a mile from my house, but it’s always disappointing, and expensive.

Posted by: burgerz?, Mar 05, 2009 12:30:32 PM

Elevation Burger has the absolutely best hamburgers, delicious fries in olive oil, and milkshakes to drive for.
The staff at the Falls Church location is always helpful, smiling and pleasant, which makes the dining experience that much more a treat.

Posted by: twinkle, Mar 05, 2009 12:13:46 PM

My wife and I love Elevation Burger. We look forward to their new location in Arlington. Its a family place with great burgers, nice staff, and the type of place you will make a destination whenever you are hungry.

Posted by: Lou Gatti, Mar 05, 2009 12:07:56 PM

Wait- Elevation doesn’t have a DC location? What’s so great about an "environmentally responsible" burger joint, if I have to DRIVE to the suburbs to get it? Thank you, Five Guys and Good Stuff for being IN the city.

Elevation doesn’t have a monopoly on being green or Veg-friendly either. Good Stuff Eatery has a "Vegetarians are People, too" burger, featured prominently, as well as recycling containers wherever you look. And their milkshakes are ALSO made with ice cream. The "black and white" shake is the best I’ve ever had. I also love Good Stuff’s Greek Salad, though I’m guessing that it’s irrelevant to this crowd/contest. :) Have many of you been to GSE, so that you’re making a fair comparison?

Everyone must have eaten at a different Elevation Burger than I did. My burger tasted like it had been cooked on a toilet seat.

Posted by: hanibalto, Mar 05, 2009 11:53:58 AM

Don’t miss ELEVATION!

Posted by: CR, Mar 05, 2009 11:41:32 AM

I am all for sustainability but this place is horrible. All of these comments are really dissappointing. It’s just another reflection on the deteriorating society we are living in today.

Posted by: Burger-Lover, Mar 05, 2009 11:38:23 AM

If Elevation Burger wasn’t so far from our house, I would go there much more often. Love the burgers, the crispy and fresh fries, the cookies - and the milkshakes are to die for! Staff is always friendly and helpful. Can you open an Elevation Burger somewhere near Vienna?

Posted by: Christine, Mar 05, 2009 11:14:58 AM

haven’t tried elevation yet - i really like the burgers at good stuff but they are not very big and overpriced. (big enough for me, but not my husband)

Posted by: x, Mar 05, 2009 11:12:44 AM

Good Stuff is way overrated. It’s not bad, but not worth the lines or cost. Must be the celeb thing.

Elevation is way better, cheaper, and doesn’t make you feel like crap after.

Posted by: JG, Mar 05, 2009 11:03:11 AM

Elevation Burger was my go-to for protein cravings during pregnancy -- happy healthy 9 lb 3 oz. baby! Love that natural beef!

Posted by: Kerry, Mar 05, 2009 11:01:59 AM

Elevation Burger is by far the best burger joint I have ever been too! Everything is fresh and delicous. The elevation burger is exactly how a good burger should taste. Not greasy, and with flavor! The staff there is awesome also. Great customer service!

Posted by: Char, Mar 05, 2009 10:59:58 AM

Go Elevation Burger! The model business and the best tasting burger in town!

Posted by: Jay, Mar 05, 2009 10:54:34 AM

Damn. Who lit the fire under Elevation Burger’s tush?

Posted by: Duuuuuude, Mar 05, 2009 10:53:18 AM

Elevation Burger is a great concept in this era of sustainability, and a fantastic tasting burger! Vote Elevation Burger for sure!

Posted by: Jay, Mar 05, 2009 10:52:04 AM

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Elevation Burger! DELICIOUS milkshakes and fries, but their burgers, which are 100% organic, are great too! In it’s defense, I haven’t been to Spike’s place yet, but I really love Elevation Burger...and I think they’re opening a new spot soon? National Harbor, maybe? Yay! Closer to my house!

Posted by: Rebecca, Mar 05, 2009 10:48:28 AM

We love Elevation Burger so much that it’s a reward after a hard day in the office.

Posted by: Lori, Mar 05, 2009 10:37:31 AM

If you are at all a burger fan and want something good to eat quickly then Elevation Burger is a must. Not to many burger restaurants have managed to crack the code between speed and quality as neatly as Elevation Burger. Crisp golden fries and milk shakes/malts made with real ice cream to boot.

Posted by: EDMorman, Mar 05, 2009 10:34:39 AM

Just had a great meal at Elevation last night with my two girls (7 and 2). The girls loved their burgers. I had a salad with my burger and it was fresh and tasty, too.

It’s cool to hear the ka-chunka sound as they convert whole potatoes into fries...that’s fresh.

Posted by: iheartburgers, Mar 05, 2009 10:28:30 AM

yep ... elevation is the best burger place in DC. their burgers are fresh, delicious ... much better than five guys (way too greasy), about which i’ve never understood the hype. love the shakes and fries, too. elevation needs a dc location, pronto.

Posted by: laura, Mar 05, 2009 10:16:04 AM

Elevation is great, but I could say that the burgers could use a little kick, or offer a burger with some additional flavor. I like the taste of plain natural beef, but I can make that at home. Even still, Elevation is good, simple, and eco friendly. Go them!

Posted by: Sue, Mar 05, 2009 10:15:17 AM

We love Elevation burger! The burgers are the most delicious and super healthy - the fries are to die for and the chocolate shake is the perfect drink to was it all down with! Plus the staff and ambience is truly nice and neighborhoody. We can’t wait for the one to open up at Harrison Street!

Posted by: deirdre modesti, Mar 05, 2009 10:14:16 AM

Elevation Burger is proof that you can take care of the environmet and your body at the same time! Try it out if you haven’t... and they are vegetarian friendly offering great veggie burgers as well as beef!

Posted by: Sarah, Mar 05, 2009 10:12:50 AM

Best burgers ever. It’s always a must when I’m in the area. And the fries, WOW!

Posted by: LW, Mar 05, 2009 10:11:44 AM

An Elevation Burger with an Elevation Shake is AMAZING

Posted by: Chris, Mar 05, 2009 10:11:23 AM

I’ve been to the Falls Church location several times. The staff is friendly, service is always great, the food is fresh and tasty. Great job Elevation Burger!

Posted by: Mark, Mar 05, 2009 10:11:22 AM

Elevation Burger makes a great burger and fries. It’s terrific to know it’s even organic and natural. One suggestion--how about whole grain buns? I’m all for Elevation Burger!

Posted by: love natural, Mar 05, 2009 10:09:10 AM

Elevation Burger is hands down the best burger joint in the region if not country right now. Good Stuff is doable, but in the way of burgers they just do not compete with EB. Elevation’s mouthwatering burgers are a testament to the true quality of organic, grass fed beef. There is SUCH a difference taste-wise, something I didn’t realize it until I ate there. Add to that that they use rapidly renewable materials in the construction of all their restaurants and you’ve got more proof of true dedication to their tag line "Ingredients Matter".

Posted by: Jill L., Mar 05, 2009 10:07:39 AM

Elevation Burger is my favorite by far!! I also love the staff and atmosphere.

Posted by: Dan Rogers, Mar 05, 2009 10:07:33 AM

I am a HUGE fan of Elevation Burger. And that, my fellow comment friends, is based on experience!

Posted by: EleFan, Mar 05, 2009 10:06:58 AM

Elevation Burger is not only the best in the city, but the best All-American burger in the country! Healthy, fresh and delicious burgers and fries, cooked and served in environmentally-sound and friendly ways. The malts and shakes are made with real ice cream--coffee with Oreo cookies is easily our favorite! The restuarant itself is always clean and bright, family-friendly with energetic staff that know your name!

Posted by: mizzou gal, Mar 05, 2009 10:05:34 AM

Have eaten at Elevation Burger about 10 or 12 times and can say that it is, by far, among my favorite places to eat (I’m not just talking burgers, folks, I’m talking restaurants- PERIOD) in the entire area. Food is amaxing.

Posted by: Diane K., Mar 05, 2009 10:05:32 AM

I second all the responses on Elevation Burger. Elevation is a revelation. I try to explain how good it is to my friends and yet they are still astounded at the food quality when they actually dine there for the first time. In fact, I’m going there again tomorrow.

Posted by: Kimberly Broughton, Mar 05, 2009 10:01:00 AM

My wife and I tried Elevation Burger on a trip to the DC area on a friend’s recommendation. The burgers were great and so was my milkshake. We actually got to talk to the owners who were very friendly and sat and talked with us for a while. I would highly recommend Elevation Burger and wish they would hurry up and expand to the west coast!

Posted by: Matt, Mar 05, 2009 09:56:35 AM

I travel the Midwest and East Coast, these are the best burgers and fries I’ve had.

Posted by: Paul Gerding, Mar 05, 2009 09:56:33 AM

Pretty weak comment from "Dude". He heard a rumor? Sounds like he’s trying to spread one. By the way, the definition of rumor is "A piece of unverified information of uncertain origin." Not even worth the read. Try an Elevation Burger. Definitely worth it.

Posted by: Burger Lawyer, Mar 05, 2009 09:55:59 AM

"Dude" heard a rumor? Dude, get off the couch and go see for yourself......Elevation Burger is the tops.

Posted by: BJH, Mar 05, 2009 09:52:35 AM

Taste beef the way it was meant to taste.

Elevation has some of the tastiest burgers I have ever eaten.

Elevation sauce is good, but save it for meat that needs some dressing up. Fries and a shake might mean you skip dinner, but it is so worth it.

There is an authenticity about the place that is sorely lacking at most other places. Its the burger place I wish I had grown up with.

Posted by: Chris D, Mar 05, 2009 09:51:52 AM

I love Elevation Burger from the burger to the fries to that shake. The taste is very very good and i have to say, after eating, I feel like I have had something pretty good for me. I think this is the way it is supposed to be!

Posted by: B-Guy, Mar 05, 2009 09:50:37 AM

Elevation Burger is a must-go for anyone who has not been. The food is night and day different (read that as better, much better) than regular fast food fare. I live in Florida but travel to the DC area regularly. Even if my meeting is in Maryland, I’ll drive 40 miles round trip out of my way to have lunch at Elevation. Don’t believe negative comments, as they are clearly from people who have NOT been there. I am going up next week and can taste the fries already.

Posted by: Joe Rubino, Mar 05, 2009 09:50:24 AM

Elevation Burger is just the best burger in the US. I live in California and wish we could replace some of our over hyped In and Out Burgers with Elevation burger. In my mind this is no contest, give elevation burger the award right now!

ELEVATION BURGER is tops in my book. Best Burgers in DC Area!!

Posted by: burgerfan, Mar 05, 2009 09:24:18 AM

Love those burgers at Elevation! Just the right size and they don’t make me belch afterwards like burgers at other places. I can even leave the carbs behind by taking them up on their lettuce wrapped burger.

Posted by: Jan, Mar 05, 2009 09:20:23 AM

maybe you should go try elevation and see for yourself. it pretty much rocks - juicy burgers, crisp fries, awesome fresh scooped milk shakes and they don’t pre cook their burgers like good stuff does. elevation actually cooks your burger to order. but if you like dry burgers that come from a holding bin good stuff is your place.

Posted by: draper, Mar 05, 2009 09:10:01 AM
