Things to Do

Five Great Free Things This August

We know the last summer month in this city can be kind of a drag. Find free coffee, treats, and yoga—or ukulele music if that’s your thing!

Don’t let the heat wave and a tight budget keep you from a good time this summer. Have some fun in the heat this month without your wallet and enjoy these events and activities that are free.

Georgetown Cupcake posts a secret Flavor of the Day that is usually not available on the menu on both their Twitter feed and Facebook page. If you go to one of its two locations and name the Flavor of the Day, it’s free for you. Limit one cupcake per customer, and each store makes just 100 Flavor of the Day cupcakes, so hurry because the free flavors go quickly. Contact the Bethesda store at 301-987-8900 or the Georgetown store at 202-333-8448 if you have questions.

Wake up with free coffee and espressos at the Counter Culture Coffee Training Center (1836 Columbia Road, NW). They serve free coffee every Friday from 10 AM until 12 PM. It’s about a 10-minute bus ride from the Woodley Park Zoo Metro.

Bring your own mat and a water bottle to Merdian Hill Park for some free yoga classes taught by instructors from local studios every Sunday Wednesday from 6 PM to 7:30 PM. The class is for all skill levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never done yoga before. Yoga studios are trying to raise money for Becky’s Fund, a nonprofit working to end domestic violence. The nearest Metro station is Columbia Heights or U Street.

The First Annual DC Scoop is coming to Union Market on August 20 from 1 PM to 4 PM. The event is a competition among local ice cream stores. You can compete in ice cream-eating contests, win prizes, and watch musicians perform. Cool off by tasting the ice cream, custard, gelato, and frozen yogurt from the competing stores. The Scoop is near the New York Avenue Metro station.

Have a fun night with Grammy Award winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxerand at the Strathmore for UkeFest 2011 on August 24 at 7 PM. Fink and Marzerand are attempting to earn an entry in the book of Guinness World Records for the Largest Ukulele Ensemble. Admission is free; bring along a blanket on and enjoy barbecue and Ben and Jerry’s as you listen to the ukulele music. The nearest Metro is the Grosvenor-Strathmore station.* To learn about delays and cancellations, go to www.strathmore.org or call 301-581-5100.

*We originally said the closest Metro stop was Bethesda. Apologies for any confusion.
