Just a public service announcement: This week is Restaurant Week. As usual, the price
has increased a penny this year—hopefully you can keep up. Get the full roundup, and
check out which of the 100 Very Best Restaurants are participating.
BIRTHDAYS: Alexandria’s
PX, one of the best speakeasies in the area, is hosting its seventh anniversary party—that
means special cocktails for the occasion. Make sure you RSVP if you plan on checking
it out, because the place fills up. 6:30 PM.
KARAOKE: Ben’s Chili Bowl isn’t one for nonsense, but Ben’s Next Door is a bit more lax. Check
it out for
DC SingKing; Monday night isn’t your typical karaoke night, but you can use it as a warmup for
a weekend night sometime. Also of note: SingKing’s circa-1998 website. 8 PM.
Tuesday, August 20
OYSTERS: If you haven’t checked out Shaw’s
A&D yet, you’re missing out on a pretty sweet foosball table. Also this week it’s bringing
in Rappahannock River Oysters for Shawshuck Redemption, a clever way of saying there’ll
be oyster shooters, whiskey drinking, and general debauchery. Oysters are $8 for a
half dozen, specialty cocktails are $8, and there’ll be door prizes. Not bad for a
Tuesday night. 7:30 PM.
Wednesday, August 21
STORIES:
Story League is back at the 14th Street Busboys and Poets—the theme this week is villains, which
can be a pretty broad category. Come to check out tales of baby sitters gone bad and
teachers being bullies, with a few truly heartbreaking stories thrown in. Tickets
($10) are available online. 9 PM.
DANCE: Moombahton is an anything-goes reggaeton/house music fusion that was created in DC by Nada Surf’s
Dave Nada. This week it features New York City deejay Sabo. Check it out if you want
to get sweaty. Tickets ($10) are available online. 9 PM at U Street Music Hall.
Thursday, August 22
BOND: The silver screen’s favorite secret agent is famous for being a Brit, but with America’s
overall awesomeness and influence, some argue that 007 is more of a Yank these days.
Head over to the
Spy Museum for a chat by historian Jonathan Nashel, who will argue that even though Bond still
rides around in an Aston Martin, maybe he should switch to a Chevy. Tickets ($10)
are available online. 6:30 PM.
