THEATER: Renee Calarco’s comedy The Religion Thing opens tonight at Theater J. The story follows a Washington couple’s attempt to balance religion, faith, and relationship woes. Tickets for tonight’s performance are pay-what-you-can, and are available at the door one hour before the show. 7:30 PM. The play runs through January 29.
MUSIC: Cellist Amy Domingues and her band, Garland of Hours, are dropping by the Black Cat to celebrate the release of their new album, Lucidia. The Arlington native has collaborated with several indie rock acts including Fugazi, Ted Leo, and Bob Mould. Tickets ($8) can be purchased through the club’s Web site. Doors open at 8 PM.
Gospel singer Lady Alma is performing at the Blues Alley tonight. “She brings gospel and blues to dance music as well as a sophisticated jazz style to modern soul,” says the Washington Post. Tickets ($20) can be purchased through the event’s Web site. 8 PM.
SIGNING: Biographer Nigel Hamilton will be signing copies of his new book, American Caesars, at the National Portrait Gallery. The book explores the lives and careers of 12 presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, and George W. Bush. Free. 6 to 7 PM.
