The Falls Church restaurant 2941 often sends diners home with a free baguette, but you can get baker Patrick Deiss’s excellent breads without paying the price of a full meal. Every day he supplies fresh-baked bread to Cafe 2941 (2941 Fairview Park Dr.; 703-270-1515), in the office building that houses the restaurant. In addition to the plain baguette ($3), there’s one dotted with dark-chocolate chips and cherries ($4). Our favorite is the olive-rosemary ($3.50), ripe with flavor inside and chewy with a fleck of sea salt on the outside.
Nathan Hatfield, who bakes the breads at Old Town’s Restaurant Eve, sends his loaves around the corner to the gourmet shop Grape & Bean (118 S. Royal St., Alexandria; 703-664-0214). There’s a different selection every day ($3.75 to $10), and customers can order through the store by 2 pm the day before. Try the potato-rosemary boule to bookend a meaty sandwich or the rustic olive loaf with dinner (both $6.75).
