Swann House

Editor's Pick: Romance

This romantic bed and breakfast, housed in an 1883 Victorian mansion, is the only inn in DC to be on the National Registry of Inns. It was named one of the Top 10 Romantic Inns in 2005 by American Historic Inns and one of Forbes magazine’s Ten Best Urban Inns in 2003; its media coverage usually references its unlikely big-city location.

Transformed from a private residence in 1997, Swann House still looks like a home straight out of the 19th century, with its garden entrance, carved fireplaces, and swimming pool.

The innkeepers try to make the guest experience a pampered one. An extensive buffet breakfast—including house-made granola—is included with the rate, as well as afternoon refreshments and evening sherry. Guests can pick from a variety of indulgences, such as Champagne and massage, for an extra fee. Although ideal for a couples getaway or special occasions, business travelers often book a room, too. The downstairs living room areas can be rented out for meeting space.
