Besides charcuterie, cheese, and aisles of packaged gourmet items, this rarefied, sometimes pricey store has a wide array of prepared foods: sandwiches such as fresh mozzarella and basil on a ficelle from the in-house bakery ($5.99), traiteur items such as beef quesadilla ($9.99 a pound), and offbeat salads—field greens, goat cheese, cranberries, and candied walnuts ($7.99) is a favorite.
But for a homey dinner that tastes as if you slaved all day in the kitchen, Balducci’s “bistro” meals are the ticket. Including a meat, chicken, or fish dish and two sides, these plates are good deals—you get generous portions for around $15. Entrées change seasonally, but there’s always a reliable roasted chicken, garlicky sautéed spinach, and creamy mashed potatoes. The trick is to reheat the main course and each side separately. Microwaving everything together can overcook one thing and undercook another.
Save room for bakery treats, or pick up a pint of Ciao Bella gelato.
