Dirt Cheap Eats 2008: Angeethi

Angeethi (645 Elden St., Herndon, 703-796-1527; 17 Catoctin Cir., Leesburg, 703-777-6785). These elegant Northern Indian curry houses proffer their best values early in the day. Weekdays, an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet—with Butter Chicken, tandoori kebabs, sweet carrot halwa, and specials such as pumpkin curry—is $10.99. Fridays bring the bonus of chola batura, a pillowy Punjabi fry bread topped with chickpeas. The places really pull out the stops on weekends between noon and 3, when crowds come in for the $13.99 Indian-style brunch. Chefs flip masala-curry omelets, griddle up cornbread topped with house-made butter, and toss spicy-sweet, Burmese-style hakka noodles with cabbage and peppers. Besides the usual chai and juice, there are four flavors of lassi plus jal jeera, a spiced tamarind cooler that aids digestion. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
