Dirt Cheap Eats 2009: Cowgirl Creamery

This Penn Quarter cheese shop could simply slather a baguette with its signature Red Hawk cheese and we’d be happy. But options get more creative for the lunch crowd.

Each day there are three prepackaged sandwiches ($7.25 each) with superb fillings: In summer we like the sharp-cheddar-and-green-apple, while cooler days bring creations such as the Mt. Tam and Ham, buttery cow’s-milk cheese with Fra’ Mani smoked ham and Dijon. For dessert, it’s hard to say no to a bag of crisp Key-lime sugar cookies ($5.50) from San Francisco’s Rustic Bakery.

Open Monday through Friday 7:30 to 7, Saturday 11 to 7.
