Burgers
DC has no shortage of great burgers, but the ones at Alex McCoy’s trio of spots—the laid-back Adams Morgan original, a roomier new Wharf restaurant, and a counter in Union Market—are exceptional. Patties are perfectly sized (not too hefty, not too thin) and wonderfully juicy. What elevates them is McCoy’s way with accessories. We like the zesty El Jefe, with American cheese, yellow mustard, hatch chilies, and pickles, or the Bogan Bun, a magical combo that includes bacon XO jam, charred onions, Gouda, and more bacon. Not into burgers? The crispy fried-chicken sandwiches are as much of a reason to visit, as are the thick fries with vinegar mayo.
