David Deshaies and Eric Eden have had a very good year—they opened the all-Japanese food hall Love, Makoto, and their other restaurant, L’Ardente, is thriving. But don’t sleep on their older, less flashy Shaw place, which serves up Deshaies’s global twists on comfort food. Brunch is served until 3:45 daily, and that’s where you’ll find some of the city’s best fried chicken atop a cornbread waffle or a noteworthy avocado toast scattered with toasted pepitas. At night, we turn to the Peking-duck confit with bao buns; Sriracha-glazed meatloaf; raisin-studded Lebanese fried rice; or chicken parm rippled with Gruyère and spinach.
