Dream Weekends: Lake Pointe Inn

A romantic hideaway.

Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Some couples dreaming of a romantic getaway may picture a mountain lodge beside a lake. They see themselves sipping morning coffee on a deck, watching the mist dance across the water.

Lake Pointe Inn, on the edge of Deep Creek Lake in McHenry, comes as close as any Mid-Atlantic inn in bringing that dream to life. Stone and native hemlock give the inn an outdoorsy look, but urban-style luxury is what you get. A sauna and steam shower help ensure relaxation.

As its name suggests, the inn sits on a point jutting into the lake. A wraparound deck, supported by 16 stone columns, is furnished with rocking chairs. Inside, the Great Room sports the dark woods and sharp angles favored by Frank Lloyd Wright. A nine-foot-tall stone fireplace climbs to the ceiling.

The inn makes it easy for guests to get on the water, providing canoes and kayaks. Each afternoon, the inn's 28-foot pontoon boat takes guests on a cruise.

Seven guest rooms offer lake views; three look toward Wisp Ski and Golf Resort.

Bottom line: A lakefront hideaway that pampers the senses.
