Dream Weekends: Savage River Lodge

A place with a mountain view.

Frostburg, Maryland

To reach the lodge, you navigate a winding gravel road that tunnels through towering stands of oak and cedar. "Are we lost?" you think.

The reward, once you arrive, is mountain luxury.

Savage River Lodge's 18 cabins, rustic only in appearance, rate as the finest in the region. Check in at the Lodge Building, which perches atop a wooded hillside with valley views.

Tucked in the trees about 200 yards away, the cabins are spacious and furnished in woodsy decor. Picture yourself settling into a page of the Sundance catalog. An overstuffed chair and sofa face a fireplace.

You could spend the day curled up with a book. But state forest surrounding the lodge asks to be explored on foot or mountain bike (rentals available).

When you're hungry, enjoy sophisticated country dining like pan-seared salmon or grilled pork tenderloin with apple-cider sauce.

Bottom line: An upscale hideaway that really is hidden.
