Where to build in Georgetown but up? McInturff Architects did it on Wisconsin Avenue, restoring two 1800s structures and adding six multistory residences clad in zinc with Douglas-fir windows.
Each unit, above commercial space, has at least one private outdoor area screened by plantings to give the illusion of a rooftop oasis. In two upper-story units, skylights between the terrace and the historic brick walls allow light down to ground level.
“Thoughtfully done,” the jury said, “reinvigorating a historic area and adding density to a desirable neighborhood.”
The contractor was Kadcon of Georgetown.
