Forget about paper and plastic. Under a new law, DC food and beverage retailers now charge a five-cent tax on disposable paper and plastic bags in an effort to reduce consumer waste and generate revenue for the Anacostia River cleanup.
If you’re like us and pinching every penny, you’ll want to try to avoid the new tax altogether by providing your own reusable tote bag.
This month, Golden Triangle Business Improvement District staff will distribute 1,000 blue-and-yellow vinyl totes (free!) to downtown denizens grabbing lunch or running errands. They’re durable and compact, so you can easily slip them into a purse or back pocket.
Where can you snag one?
• Dupont Circle south Metro entrance • 19th Street between L and M streets, Northwest • Farragut West Metro entrance
To find out exact times and locations for the bag distribution, contact the Golden Triangle BID at 202-463-3400.
