Things to Do

Where & When: This Week in Washington Nightlife

Monday: Race and Journalism
Washington power journalist Gwen Ifill, managing editor of PBS news show Washington Week, stops by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library tonight to discuss the state of race in American politics and to sign her book The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. The free event starts at 7.

Tuesday: Film by Design
Nothing sets the tone for a movie more than the opening title sequences, which really are an art in and of themselves. Kyle Cooper, who's done the title sequences for films like Seven and Spider-Man, talks about his job tonight at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center. $35, 6:30 PM.

Wednesday: St. Vincent
For a long time, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark was in the background of other bands (Polyphonic Spree, Sufjan Stevens), but now she’s performing solo. Her striking, lush, and cinematic pop will make her a big name soon enough, mark our words. See what we mean tonight at the 9:30 Club. $15, 7 PM.

Thursday:  A Family Variety Show
Head to the Arts Club of Washington for a mix of local, independent music and comedy. BrightestYoungThings.com sponsors a night of local musicians like Matt Hemerlein and stand up comics. $15, 8:30 PM.
