There are two film versions of the novel The Axe of Wandsbek by Arnold Zweig—one made in East Germany and one made in West Germany. The cultural and political differences are evident in the story of a butcher who takes over the hangman’s job on the eve of a visit from Hitler. Catch the East German version tonight at the Goethe Institut. 6:30; $7.
