BOOKS: Author, poet, and activist Alice Walker, best known for The Color Purple, is reading at Busboys and Poets. FILM: Learn about growing up in a different culture at the Growing Up: German Youth in Film festival at the Goethe-Institut. Films will screen every Monday through May 23. Tonight's offering, Run If You Can, is about a wheelchair-bound student and his caretaker who fall in love with the same girl. 6:30 PM; tickets are $7.

BENEFIT: Urban Chic is collecting party, bridesmaids, and other formal dresses for Baltimore's The Magic Wand Project, which donates gently used formal wear to underprivileged high school students for their prom.
