Inn of Silent Music
4 hours away
Relax and recharge where there are no cars, no noise, and no neighbors—unless you count the blue herons in the marsh. The Inn of Silent Music (410-425-3541) is in the remote village of Tylerton on Smith Island, nine miles from the mainland on the Chesapeake Bay. The waterfront inn has three sunny guest rooms furnished with charming finds.
The island has no roads, so guests explore on the inn's bikes, kayaks, and canoes. For even more peace and quiet, you can book complimentary half days at the Green House, a remote cabin set amid loblolly pines and cedars overlooking Tangier Sound.
To get to the Inn of Silent Music, you park in Crisfield, Maryland, and pick up the Captain Jason II, a passenger ferry that leaves twice a day—at 12:30 or 5 PM. Round-trip tickets cost $40 a person. Drum Point Market sells ten-layer Smith Island cake and fresh quarter-pound crabcakes to go. A multicourse dinner featuring local seafood is available at the inn for $25 a person. Rates: $110 to $130 a night, including a full breakfast.
