OPERA: Plácido Domingo stars in the opera Iphigénie en Tauride at the Kennedy Center. The opera, based on the Greek tragedy, comes at the end of Domingo’s tenure as general manager of the Washington National Opera. Through May 28; get tickets ($65 to $300) at the Kennedy Center’s Web site.
THEATER: Also opening tonight is A Time To Kil at Arena Stage. It’s the world premiere of the play, based on John Grisham’s novel about race and justice in the South. Tickets are $55 and up at Arena’s Web site. Through June 19.
Catch Robert Owens-Greygrass’s one-man show, Ghostlands of an Urban NDN, at the National Museum of the American Indian. He portrays 16 different characters, each a different representation of an indigenous culture around the globe. 7 pm; buy tickets ($25) at the Capital Fringe Web site.
FESTIVAL: The Potomac Bonsai Festival is at the National Arboretum through May 8. There will be demonstrations, bonsai artists, a variety of Asian-food vendors, and children’s activities. Free.
Saturday, May 7
MUSICAL: The highly anticipated revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies opens tonight at the Kennedy Center starring Broadway favorites Bernadette Peters, Elaine Paige, and Linda Lavin. The musical, about retired showgirls, runs through June 19. Get tickets ($45 to $150) at the KenCen’s site.
EXHIBIT: See all of the highlights of the Washington Post’s annual Peeps diorama contest, including the winning entry depicting the Chilean mine rescue. At Artisphere though May 31; there’s an open house today from noon to 4, where all visitors get a Peeps gift bag.
FESTIVAL: Spend the day embassy-hopping thanks to the European Union Embassy Open House Day. Take behind-the-scenes tours, participate in various cultural activities, and sample food and drinks from across the pond. For a complete list of participating embassies, click here.
PARTY: Long View Gallery is hosting a watch party for “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” Don your fancy hat or seersucker suit and enjoy bottomless mint juleps while watching the Kentucky Derby on several large flat screens. ART: See the latest acquisition by the National Gallery of Art, the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection, featuring the drawings and other works of Italian masters such as Canaletto, Tintoretto, and Tiepolo. They’ll be on display through November 27.
FESTIVAL: For more Italian action, head to the Italians in DC Festival at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center . There’s an art exhibition, winetastings, live music, and of course, plenty of food. No cover for the festival, but some events carry a charge. 2 to 9.
