Gray to Name New Chief of Staff: As reported by the Washington City Paper‘s Loose Lips last week, Mayor Vincent Gray is set to announce Christopher Murphy as his new chief of staff today. Murphy previously served as deputy chief of staff at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Former Howard Dean deputy campaign manager Andrea “Andi” Pringle will also be named as Murphy’s deputy.

Power Back By Friday: Thousands of people in the Washington area are still without power, but according to Pepco and Dominion, most everyone should have their lights back on by Thursday or Friday. Dominion brought in utility trucks, and crews from as far away as Texas and Louisiana to help with the cleanup. How are conditions in your neighborhood?

Crittenton To Turn Himself In: Former Wizard Javaris Crittenton, wanted by the FBI for murder, will supposedly turn himself in in Atlanta this morning. Crittenton allegedly shot and killed 24 year-old mother of four Julian Jones in a drive-by shooting. Crittenton, of course, became infamous in Washington for his role as the other player who brought guns into the Wizards locker room opposite Gilbert Arenas. Michael Lee of the Washington Post reflects on how Crittenton went from honor roll student in high school and college to the FBI’s Most Wanted List. 

Pontius Called Up: DC United forward Chris Pontius will be joining teammate Bill Hamid on the US Men’s National Soccer Team roster for upcoming friendlies against Costa Rica and Belgium. This marks the second time Pontius has been called up for national-team duty. In other DC United news, last weekend’s match at RFK against the Portland Timbers, which was postponed due to Hurricane Irene, will now take place on Oct. 19th at 8 PM. 

Reaction To Closing of Shaw’s Tavern: The closing of Shaw’s Tavern—which posted on its Facebook page that it could not go forward without a liquor license—sure did elicit numerous blog posts over the last few days. Was ABRA too hard on the tavern, or should it be wary of a business that allegedly forged documents in order to skirt city liquor laws?

Briefly Noted: Arrests have been made in the two murders that occurred separately near Capitol Hill over the weekend. Police said that although there were similarities between the two killings, the incidents were not related…Former D.C. Councilmember Nadine Poole Winter, who represented Ward 6 from 1975 through 1991, passed away on Friday. She was 87.
