Food Diaries: Finding Healthy Food at Nationals Park

Katie Fouts, co-owner of Biker Barre, shares how she celebrated opening day without overindulging.

Exercise instructors like Katie Fouts aren’t always naturally fit. Fouts, a co-owner of Biker Barre in Capitol Hill, says she lost 50 pounds by “having a lot of healthy fun.” These days, she teaches barre and cycling classes multiple times a week at her studio, runs, practices yoga, and plays Frisbee. The secret, she says, is sticking with things she truly enjoys—which include heading to the Nationals’ home opener on Monday. Read on to see how she “had a blast and stayed healthy.”

Breakfast: “I had a quick pre-run nibble of a banana and caffeine before running five miles on the Mall. Whenever my brain could drift away from the complex maze created by the cherry blossom tourists, I was thinking of one thing: sausages. More specifically, big, juicy Italian sausages that you can get at the Senator’s Sausages stands at the ballpark. They’re one of my favorite things about Nationals games, and today I planned to bite into one!”

Lunch: “By 11 AM I was hungry. Knowing that I’d be heading to the game, I wanted to eat something bulky but light. I made my own salad at Sweetgreen: avocado, soba noodles, carrot, cucumber, sprouts, Sriracha, and lime juice. Really hit the spot.”

Afternoon meal: “Go Nats! And go Bryce Harper, you cute thing, you! No baseball game would be complete without a beer. My friends and I walked straight into the Red Porch bar, where I had a Blue Moon. I found myself being lured by El Verano Taqueria, the taco joint behind the Red Porch. Betraying my Senator’s Sausage tradition, I ended up giving the tacos a shot, and I’m glad I did. I got the vegetarian option, and they were great—lots of different roasted veggies and tons of flavor. Just enough food. I’ll be back!”

Dinner: “After the game, my friend and I walked to Eastern Market, and after some time spent warming up over tea, we decided to grab a small dinner at Hank’s Oyster Bar. We split the beet and arugula salad, Old Bay French fries, and a dozen oysters. We each had a glass of white wine and toasted to our town—cheers to DC!”
