Do I need a Tummy Tuck or will Liposuction correct my tummy problems?

Do I need a Tummy Tuck or will Liposuction correct my tummy problems?

When it comes to tummy rejuvenation after pregnancy, weight loss, excess fat deposits or just aging there are two options to consider: tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, or liposuction.

What can liposuction do for me?

Liposuction is a wonderful, relatively non-invasive way to remove excess fat deposits in numerous areas throughout the body, including the abdomen. It works well to shape and contour the area and thin the underlying fat. Liposuction can be performed in a limited fashion under local anesthesia, or under general anesthesia for larger areas, and is outpatient-based. However, there are limitations of liposuction of the abdomen: it will not remove stretch marks, tighten loose skin or remove any rolls of skin. Recovery is easy and there is minimal down time. You would just wear a compression garment for a couple of weeks – then you are off and running to show off your new tummy.

Are there other options for me to rejuvenate my abdominal area?

Loose skin, rolls of skin, stretch marks, protuberant abdomen after childbirth or weight loss – these concerns are best addressed with a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty. This procedure will rejuvenate the abdomen from the upper abdomen down to the pubic area, will tighten the underlying loose muscles, if needed, and remove loose skin and a variable amount of stretch marks. It may remove old C-Section scars as well. The procedure, while more invasive than liposuction, is still a procedure of skin and fat only. No fat is or can be removed from the deeper abdomen (around the intestines). This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can be outpatient-based. Recovery is slightly longer than liposuction alone but the results can be dramatic for a new you.

How do I know which procedure is right for me?

I routinely see patients who think they need a tummy tuck but liposuction will give them the desired correction, and patients who feel they can be treated with liposuction but in reality need a tummy tuck for achieving their goals. The best way to truly know which procedure is right for you is to visit with a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
