JOURNALISM: Shameless plug on a slow week: My alma mater, Eleanor Roosevelt High School, is hosting a fundraiser for its journalism program, which produced such all-stars as me, at Franklins in Hyattsville. It’s a great excuse to make the trip to the craft brewery/restaurant/general store, one of the area’s best. Its beers occasionally turn up in bars around town, but at the brewery you can sample about half a dozen different types, and the general store sells all sorts of curios, so maybe you can get some of your holiday shopping done a bit early. The school gets 20 percent of proceeds from everything you order or buy, as long as you mention that’s what you’re there for. Also I’ll sign autographs or tell you stories or take a selfie with you if you want to hang out with a celeb. 5 PM to close.
ROCK OPERA: Doesn’t a “prog-metal rock opera” sound like something you want to check out on a Monday night? Thought so. The Landless Theatre Company is staging Richard Campbell’s Frankenstein at Black Cat, featuring the classic you love, but with metal music, crazy costumes, and way more head-banging than your average opera. Tickets ($10) are available online. 8 PM.

ARTS + CRAFTS + DIVE BARS: Codmother is not really the place you’d expect an Etsy-ish DIY crafts night to happen, but here we are. The dive bar ($6 PBR + whiskey shots, ALWAYS) is hosting indie crafts mag Luri & Wilma for its Very Green Holiday party, which will feature make-your-own ornaments, warm spiced cider, plenty of whiskey, and copies of the new holiday issue of the magazine. The first 50 people get a free goodie bag featuring fancy candles and soaps and things like that. Free (the magazine costs extra). 7 PM.
Wednesday, November 27
VARIETY SHOW: By now, if you’re a transplant to DC, you should probably be out of town, and if you’re from here, you should be hanging out with your childhood friends and family who have made the trip back for Thanksgiving. If you haven’t decided which embarrassingly bad bar from your youth you’re going to revisit, maybe try out some better options like Wonderland, which hosts its monthly circus featuring music, standup comedy, burlesque, and dancing afterward, all for five bucks. 8:30 PM.
DANCE: Alternatively, you can check out Black Whiskey’s pre-Thanksgiving dance party, featuring DJ Sharkey and shelves and shelves of fancy whiskey to keep you warm. Free. 9 PM.
