This week, meet singles at a cooking class, take a workshop with SlowFood, and compare California Cabernets.

Monday, March 1
Cork Market (1805 14th St., NW; 202-265-2674) is hosting the first part of its four-class Wine Fundamentals series. The 90-minute session covers basic wine vocabulary, wine storage, serving techniques, the difference between grape varietals, and how to properly swirl, sniff, and sip to evaluate wine. 7 PM; $45. Tuesday, March 2
Open Kitchen (7115 Leesburg Pike #107, Falls Church; 703-334-1504) hosts a cooking class that doubles as a singles mixer. At the Marinate and Mingle class, you’ll learn to make chipotle grilled pork tenderloin, yogurt/curry-marinated swordfish or mahi mahi, marinated roasted root vegetables, and macerated fruit over vanilla ice cream. 7 PM; $75. Wednesday, March 3
As part of the first annual Capital Wine Festival, the Fairfax Hotel at Embassy Row is hosting a four-course wine dinner featuring vintner Alex Gambal. The menu includes cured hamachi with red grapefruit, jicama, lavender, and a honey vinaigrette; stuffed rabbit saddle with herb gnocchi, bacon lardons, and raspberry jus; and cherry mille-feuille with pain d'epices vanilla ice cream and white chocolate. 7 PM; $125. SlowFood DC is hosting workshops with urban-farm expert Will Allen at Lynchburg Grows (1339 Englewood St., Lynchburg; 434-846-5665) today and tomorrow. Allen is a 2008 MacArthur fellowship recipient and cofounder of the Milwaukee-based nonprofit Growing Power. The workshops include discussions on worm farming and aquaponics (using fish to grow plants), and there’ll be presentations by the Environmental Protection Agency. Stop by Elk Run Vineyards (15113 Liberty Rd., Mt. Airy; 410-775-2513) for the class How Wine Is Affected by Flavor and Texture in Food. You’ll learn how spice combinations and sweetness influence the flavors of wine, and you’ll learn to pair wine with specific foods. Tickets are $20, and the class goes from 2 to 3:30.
