What’s in Mr. Yogato’s Shopping Cart?

Pete from Mr. Yogato cleans out the "Soviet" Safeway.

Wondering why your Safeway shelves are cleaned out of milk? Monday night we ran into Pete, an employee at Mr. Yogato (1515 17th St., NW), buying 15 gallons of skim milk at the Safeway at 17th and Corcoran streets—a couple of blocks from the new and super-popular yogurt shop. “Don’t you get your milk from a supplier?” I asked.

“We do, but we can only get two deliveries a week. We don’t have enough fridge space. So we have to come here to replenish,” he explained, pushing his cart full of milk back to the store to whip up more batches of peach (new!), mojito, original soft, and original tangy. Since the “Soviet” Safeway is always out of everything anyway, something tells me that the community would be more upset if Mr. Yogato ran out of yogurt. We can deal with no milk.

All milk has haturally occuring hormones in it, including organic. Soymilk contains estrogenic compounds. Uniformed consumers are a marketers dream. Overeducated high-income consumers are a marketers wet dream.

Wow, talk about the organic police... I agree that it’s great to go organic when you can, but somehow I don’t think a serving of Yogato or two will kill ya. Somehow, most of us were raised on "regular" milk and did just fine.

I would pay more for organic.

Why not give customers a choice for a while.? See if they are willing to pay higher for organic. Let’s see...organic -no hormones-less risk of disease but more money or less money but I can’t spend it "CAUSE I.M SO SICK,,,HMMM...

Yup, we have to make 3 Safeway milk runs/week. But don’t worry about us "cleaning them out." Our 40 gallons of weekly purchases is a tiny percentage of what they sell (we checked w/ the manager about this before starting this purchasing schedule). As for organic milk, we have been looking at it, but its higher cost would result in us having to raise prices on all sizes and we definitely do not want to do this! If you are aware of comparably priced (including shipping) organic milk, I am definitely interested!

Ew. That’s the hormone infested kind of milk. I’m so disappointed.
