Where & When: What to Do Tonight

One-of-a-kind instruments take the stage tonight

For a Thursday-night dance party, try Planet of the Drums at U Street Music Hall. The show features Dieselboy, AK1200, and Dara Messinian. 9 PM; tickets ($17) are available here.

Anyone can play the guitar, but it’s a rare talent that can sound great on made-up instruments. Buke and Gass do just that with the baritone/ukulele and a guitar/bass hybrids they built. Hear them at the Rock & Roll Hotel at 8:30. Buy tickets ($10) here.

Emma Donoghue’s novel Room tells the story of five-year-old Jack whose life is entirely confined in the titular 11-by-11-foot space. She’s speaking and signing copies of the book at Politics and Prose at 7. Free.
