There’s something for everyone this weekend, including story time for kids, celebrations of Women’s History Month, and planning ahead for the circus.
Storybook Festival
Saturday, March 12, from 11 to 2, the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave.) is hosting a Storybook Festival for kids ages three to eight. Admission is $5 per person; kids under two are free. The festival includes princess characters, puppet shows, arts and crafts, and the ever-popular face painting. Parking is free.
Celebrating Women’s History Month: Women in Aviation & Space
March is Women’s History Month, and the National Air & Space Museum’s Udvard-Hazy Center is honoring women in aviation and space Saturday, March 12, from 10 to 3. Admission is free, but parking is $15. As part of the celebration, visitors can view science projects conducted by local Girl Scout Troops. It sounds like a great way to encourage little girls to consider aviation and space as future careers. I’ve never been to this facility before but just might get there Saturday.
Looking Ahead: The Elephant Walk and Circus
Head to Capitol Hill Tuesday, March 22, at 2 PM for the annual Elephant Walk. Once a year, elephants parade through town from Union Station, past the Capitol, to the Verizon Center. One of the best places to view the walk is at the Mall on Third Street NW between Madison and Jefferson Drives.
The reason the elephants are coming? The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in town at the Verizon Center from March 24 through 27 and in Fairfax from April 14 through 24. This year’s circus features 130 performers, including elephants, cowboys, pirates, and mermaids. An hour before the circus, families can attend a free pre-show featuring performers and a painting elephant. Get tickets ($14 to $35) through Ticketmaster—and Washingtonian.com is giving two lucky families four tickets each through a special sweepstakes.
I’d recommend Metro for both the Elephant Walk and the Circus, as parking around the Verizon Center can be difficult and expensive.
