Cafes & Carryouts
Across the street from the Ethiopian restaurants in DC’s Shaw neighborhood is this quiet bakery/wi-fi cafe opened in March by Haregewine Messert.
Although the alum of the Ritz-Carlton pastry kitchen spends much of her time turning out elegant special-occasion cakes—and cutting customers rectangular slices of rum-infused, pineapple-and-banana Tropical Cake or tiramisu ($4.95)—she also fills her glass cases with delicate confections: brittle palmiers, traditional kisses of French macaroon, and our favorite, the almond-flavored butter cookies known as sables (two for $1).
