Best of 2004: Great Cake

Tres leches cake is better than chocolate.

Even the rabidly chocolate-centric are likely to come around after tasting a moist, dense slab of the Nicaraguan-style tres leches cake at Cafe Salsa (808 King St., Alexandria; 703-684-4100). Made with a trio of whole, sweetened condensed, and evaporated milk, this is about as rich as it gets. Have it with whipped cream or really gild the lily with an extra blob of condensed milk. It's $5.95 for a slice that will feed two.
