The Wine Guy: California Wine Month

Local restaurants—and our cynical wine columnist—celebrate West Coast wines.

Okay, so here I am trying to convince everyone that “American wine” means more than California. Then Governor Ah-nold declares September “California Wine Month.” What’s a jaded wine writer to do when faced with such a grandstanding, self-serving marketing ploy?

Why, go along, of course!

Several area restaurants are going along, too. The five area Legal Seafoods are featuring California wines produced according to sustainable agricultural practices, in harmony with the company’s effort to promote sustainable seafood. On Thursdays in September, owner Ashok Bajaj’s restaurants—701, Rasika, Ardeo, Bardeo, the Oval Room and the Bombay Club—will each feature ten California wines by the glass, special wine flights, and California wine dinners.

The Washington Wine Academy is offering a Potomac dinner cruise on September 20 featuring California wines. Tickets are $68 per person and include a buffet dinner, an educational wine tasting, live music, and all those nice Potomac views. Call 703-971-1525 or click here for tickets.
