A fashionable bike ride, innovative theater projects, and the start of holiday-season fun

Thursday, November 11
Midsummer tells the story of a one-night stand that just won’t end. The romantic musical comedy includes car chases, found fortunes, and horrible hangovers. It’s part of the Kennedy Center’s “On the Fringe: Eye on Edinburgh” program and is playing through November 13. 8:30. Tickets ($25) are available here.

Mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins is singing her repertoire of pop numbers and classical arias at the Birchmere. Her debut album is the fastest-selling in the classical-pop crossover genre. 7:30. Tickets ($29.50) are available here.

Project Brand New, a Dublin-based arts festival, is coming to Washington starting this week. The event gives artists an informal space to test-drive innovative theater. It’s at the Flashpoint Theater through November 13. 7 PM. Buy tickets ($15) here or at the door.

Friday, November 12
It’s Cheap Date Night at Woolly Mammoth Theatre, so it’s time to take your favorite guy or gal for a classy night out. Tickets ($20) include the show The House of Gold, happy hour before and afterward (sponsored by PBR), and a chance to mingle with the artists and actors. Use the promo code “1035” when purchasing tickets from the Woolly Mammoth box office.

The local progressive bluegrass group Punch Brothers is playing at the Strathmore. Guitarist Chris Eldridge comes from a family of well-known Washington-based bluegrass musicians. 8 PM. Purchase tickets ($25 to $42) here.

Bust a gut with “Chinese Menu,” a night of improv from a lineup of some of Washington’s best talent, including Pete Bergen. The show is at the DC Arts Center. Call 202-462-7833 to order tickets ($8 to $10). 10 PM.

Saturday, November 13
Michael Hurst, an artist formerly based in DC, has returned to curate “extraORDINARY” at Cre8 (1314 Ninth St., NW). Today, he’s joining eight other artists at the show’s opening. The exhibit aims to celebrate a new collective way of thinking about and displaying art. 7 PM; free.

Get a jump on the Christmas season with the Northern Virginia Christmas Market in the Dulles Expo Center. Chose the perfect present from among the more than 250 arts-and-crafts, food, and seasonal-decorations vendors. Admission is $8, and you can get $1 off by bringing a canned-food donation for the Capital Area Food Bank. 10 to 6.

A Washington holiday favorite is back: Weather permitting, today is the season opening of the Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. For today and tomorrow, buying ice time (two hours for $7) and renting skates ($3) or a locker (50 cents) gets you free hot chocolate. Every second Saturday, head to the 9:30 Club’s back bar for a night of vintage rock, pop, glam, and disco music and a dance party, presented by the New Gay. Music is by DJ Zack Rosen. 11 PM.

Sunday, November 14
Bike riding gets a vintage makeover today at the Tweed Ride, sponsored by Dandies & Quaintrelles. Riders are asked to make a donation, which will go to Arts for the Aging. Following the ride is a party ($25) with gin cocktails, ’20s music, and a fashion show. So don your vest and cap and get cycling. Get in touch with your inner Tarzan (or Jane) at Go Ape in Rockville Regional Park (6129 Needwood Lake Dr., Derwood). The treetop obstacle course, featuring zip lines, giant swings, and a ropes course, is offering a special rate ($35), and proceeds go to the City Kids Wilderness Project. Use code “CKWP14” when booking.

Close out your weekend with a night of jazz at the Lounge of III. DJs Cerebral, 2-Tone Jones, and Neal Becton present the classics. There’ll also be jazz-themed cocktails. No cover. 6 to midnight.
