Ten Under $10: Fun on a Budget

STOMP at the Social Safeway, recycled art, and New Year’s resolutions

Alison Sigethy’s new exhibit, “Understory" is now at Art League until February 7. To celebrate the opening of the mixed-media show—most of the pieces are made from recycled materials—the gallery is hosting a reception Thursday from 6:30 to 8, featuring a performance by Karen Reedy Dance. Free.

In conjunction with the new Alexis Rockman exhibit, the American Art Museum is screening a series of classic sci-fi films. This Thursday is Them!, which explores what happens when giant ants attack. 6 PM. Free.New York photographer Mike Schreiber—who has worked with rappers such as M.I.A., Biz Markie, the Beastie Boys, and Mos Def—is speaking at the Washington DC Jewish Community Center Thursday as part of the new “Off the Wall” lecture series. He’ll focus on his latest book, True Hip-Hop, which compiles his work from the last 13 years. 7:30. Free.

Before it lands at the Warner Theatre later this month, the Broadway hit STOMP is doing a mini-performance at the Social Safeway Thursday evening. There’ll be a wine-and-cheese tasting. 6:30. Free.

Friday, Touchstone Gallery is hosting opening receptions for two new shows. The first, “Off Kilter,” features artist Leslie Nolan’s large acrylics-on-canvas; the second is a group exhibition by 50 member artists. There’ll also be complimentary wine from Bistro Blanc, as well as live music. 6 to 8:30. Free.

Saturday afternoon, the National Gallery is screening Ossessione, a 1942 Italian adaptation of a 1935 American crime novel. 4:30. Free.

DJs Ratt Moze, Chris Nitti, and Phillip Goyette are spinning electronic, house, disco, hip-hop, and more at Rock & Roll Hotel Friday night as part of the Clockwork Dance Party. 9:30 PM to 2:30 AM. Free.

We may be midway through January, but it’s not too late to get started on your New Year’s resolutions. For a kick start, head to the 18th annual NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo at the Washington Convention Center Saturday. There’ll be more than 200 exhibitors, plus free health screenings, demonstrations, and other activities. 9 to 5. Free.

The DC-based music blog NewDust.com is hosting a show at the Velvet Lounge Saturday, featuring Painted Face and Randier. The doors open at 9. $8.
