Waterfront dining in crab country doesn’t get better than the Crab Claw in St. Michaels on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Reserve a table on the deck overlooking the water, where picnic tables stocked with rolls of paper towels set the stage for a crab-cracking feast.

Order a classic meal of steamed blue crabs, coleslaw, onion rings, and a pitcher of Crab Claw Ale.

After eating, stroll past fishing boats, yachts, and skipjacks along the harbor. Cross a footbridge and you’re in the heart of picturesque St. Michaels, where you can stop by Justine’s Ice Cream Parlour (106 St. Talbot St.; 410-745-0024) for a creamsicle shake or an espresso. At Flamingo Flats (100 S. Talbot St.; 410-745-2053), a shop devoted to sauces of all kinds, pick up some Chesapeake Fire, a locally made hot sauce spiked with Wild Goose beer.
