CHILL: Now that Black Cat has successfully celebrated its 20th birthday without any disasters, it’s time to take a look at its past with Couch Night, a throwback to the club’s early days. The theory is simple: Sometimes people like heading over to a friend’s house after work to relax on the couch. Maybe they’ll drink a beer and listen to some new music. That’s what happens here, only your friend’s house is the Cat’s Red Room and you don’t have to clean up the couch if you spill beer on it (but please don’t). Deejay Joshua provides the tunes. DRINK: Did you know St. Patrick’s Day is only six months away? I’m not sure what color you should wear, but the theory is pretty much the same at the Clyde’s in Rockville: Lots of drinks for low prices. Pints of Guinness are $3, car bombs are $5, and shots of Jameson are $3. Toss the money you save into your leprechaun piggy bank for the real deal in March. All day.

COMEDY: If you don’t know who Erik Griffin is (and hopefully you do, because he’s Montez on Workaholics and that show is awesome), you’re missing out on one of the funniest rising comedians. Besides being sometimes pal, sometimes antagonist to those three troublemakers, he’s also been featured on such critically acclaimed shows as Franklin & Bash and Last Comic Driving. What I’m saying is you either know him as Montez or you don’t know him. Get better acquainted at Jammin’ Java, where he’ll perform standup. Tickets ($15) are available online. 7 PM.
MUSIC: In a desperate attempt to stay relevant, Yellowcard, that band you know because they sing that song about Ocean Avenue and have an electric violin in their band, has re-released the album Ocean Avenue with an acoustic violin instead. Head out to the Fillmore if you’re interested in reliving mid-2000s pop-punk a little less loudly than you lived it the first time. Tickets ($31) are available online. 8 PM.
STORIES: Catch Story League at the 14th & V location of Busboys and Poets. The series is always good for a few laughs, a few cries, and a few what-the-hecks. $10. 9 PM.
Thursday, September 19
THEATER: It’s been roughly 20 years since PBS’s Jim Lehrer has written a play, but now Bell, a one-man show dedicated to the man who created the landline telephone (remember those?), is at National Geographic’s Grosvenor Auditorium through the end of this weekend. Alexander Graham Bell is played by Rick Foucheux—you may have seen him play Charles Darwin or Samuel Clemens around town before. For more on Bell, see our earlier story.
