Only a few Embassy Row locations will offer candy this year.

It’s been a longstanding tradition for DC embassies to open their doors for trick-or-treating along Massachusetts Avenue. However, the October tradition seems to be dwindling, and only five embassies confirmed they will be handing out candy this year. Seven embassies participated in 2024—a tiny jump from recent years, where only around five or six locations welcomed costumed kids and college students. By comparison, American University published a list in 2016 with 12 embassies that were likely spots for trick-or-treating, based on information from the 2015 season.

Some of the embassies that participated last year are sitting out this Halloween. The Embassy of Paraguay told us they had “no plans” to offer candy, mentioning there are “a lot of things going on.” When we reached out to the Indonesian Embassy and Embassy of Lesotho, both locations replied that they did not know whether they’d welcome trick-or-treating.

However, five embassies did confirm they will be open during their business hours to receive trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Keep in mind that candy may be limited, so go as early as the offices allow.
