Why you might roll your eyes:

You’ve waited in a VISA line before, and it was quite enough, thank you.

Why you’ll love it:

Washington’s 176 resident embassies inhabit structures from historic mansions (the Embassy of Indonesia in Dupont Circle) to cool, contemporary edifices (the glass-and-steel Embassy of Finland). Dozens open to the public during the annual Passport DC on May 2, offering cooking demos, tours, and music and dance performances. Other opportunities for getting inside those gates: the mostly classical concerts of the Embassy Series and dance parties, winetastings, and other fun organized by the International Club of DC. You can also check the websites of individual embassies, which often host exhibits, tours, and other events.
