Michelle Obama’s Best Looks of 2013

January 17th: at the White House. This one’s for the hair: it marked the debut of the famous bangs—and the First Lady’s first day on Twitter.
January 19th: at the Kids’ Inaugural Concert. The Alexander McQueen blouse featured a victorian bustle in the back, but the true stunner here was the crystallized citrine belt—which was $48 at Anthropologie, and sold out immediately following the event.
January 21st: inauguration day. The custom-made coat, inspired by a men’s necktie and designed by the eccentric Thom Browne, is remembered for its gorgeous pattern and flawless fit. She wore it here with a J. Crew belt: all American designers for a very patriotic day.
January 22nd: the National Prayer Service. The geometrically patterned and beaded Naeem Khan dress looked even more stunning with its matching jacket.
February 22nd: on the Dr. Oz show. This outfit proves that Michelle Obama is a pro at the hard-to-pull-off task of mixing patterns. The pencil silhouette and tasteful kitten heel kept the look professional, while pops of magenta added an element of fun.
February 24th: at the Oscars, via satellite. The cameo was unexpected, but a very impressive style moment for the First Lady. Embellished Naeem Khan.
April 4th: in the White House Kitchen Garden, where we learned its possible to look incredibly chic while sitting in a bed of dirt—from the prim low-bun to the trendy printed skinnies. Also: Michelle Obama owns a pair of chucks, which argubly makes her infinitely cooler.
May 9th: at the Joining Forces Military Mothers Day tea party. FLOTUS has always been one to support younger designers—as she did here by wearing a spring-appropriate number by Prabal Gurung.
May 16th: over tea at the White House: This monochrome pair of a shimmering pleated skirt and simple matching tee made for a sophisticated, feminine ensemble when the First Lady hosted the wife of the Turkish ambassador.
June 27th: at a presidential dinner in Senegal. More Naeem Khan: this printed silk gown—straight from the fall 2011 runway—was also worn to the 2012 White House Correspondent’s Association dinner, sans sleeves.
June 29th: at the Sci Bono discovery center in Johannesburg: the Obamas’ trip to Africa made for countless stylish moments, like this one—another display of masterful color- and pattern-mixing. Photograph via @FLOTUS on Twitter.
December 25th: at the Obamas’ Christmas celebration. The floor-length gown was beautifually festive for the holiday season, but also very timely: radiant orchid had just been named color of the year by Pantone.
Also of note: the bejeweled, J. Mendel resort 2013 dress she wore for the taping of “Christmas in Washington.” Photograph via @BarackObama on Twitter.
