Dream Weekends: Rittenhouse Square B&B

Perfect for history lovers.

Philadelphia

Hidden on a small street just off posh Rittenhouse Square, this renovated carriage house is a find for anyone who prefers small lodgings. With a location smack in the center of Philadelphia, it's ideal for exploring museums and the Old City.

The eight guest rooms and two suites feature decor that varies from brass beds to sleek upholstered headboards, but all have Impressionist-style paintings, luxurious linens, and marble baths. A few have gas fireplaces. Robes, evening turndown, and free Internet are among the amenities.

Guests are invited for wine each evening in a lobby done with French flair: yellow-and-white-striped wallpaper, sofas, antiques, and a crystal chandelier. Fresh-baked croissants, pastries, fruit, yogurt, and cereals are served on fine china at breakfast.

Bottom line: The kind of intimate inn rarely found in a big city.
