How would you describe your style?

Classic and stylish. I have loved to dress since I was a kid. I came from a very humble family, but I always wanted to wear what I wanted to wear.

What about your new fashion company, Manfacto?

I wanted to bring Italian fashion to Washington. My tailor comes in from Italy about four times a year, and we make custom suits, shirts, sport jackets, overcoats, tuxedos.

Favorite designers?

Almost all of my clothes are made by my tailor in Italy. Every summer I order some clothes from Kiton in Naples; they have the best fabric. My favorite formal shoes are Testoni. I’ve been wearing Fratelli Rossetti shoes for more than 25 years—they are very comfortable. I also like Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Ferragamo.

Is there something you frequently splurge on?

I collect ties.

How many do you have?

Believe me, a lot. More than 3,000.

Favorite item in your closet?

My Zegna sport coat because you can dress it up or down.

Fashion advice?

You have to dress for yourself, not anybody else. To feel good, you don’t have to wear big names or spend a lot of money. A white shirt is always elegant. Dark blue and black are always elegant.
