Monday, June 2: Bette Davis Retrospective
Buckle up for the great Bette Davis. Starting today, the National Theatre (1321 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; 202-783-3372) will have weekly screenings of some of the actress’s most celebrated films, including All About Eve, Jezebel, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? The retrospective kicks off with Now, Voyager, in which Davis dazzles as a depressed spinster who turns her life around. Free admission. Tickets are distributed 30 minutes prior to show.
Tuesday, June 3: Chuck Palahniuk
Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk will be at the Avalon Theatre (5612 Connecticut Ave., NW; 202-966-6000) for an interview moderated by local author Eric Nuzum (who’s written his fair share of bizarre tales). Palahniuk will also read an excerpt from his latest novel, Snuff, which follows an aging porn star bent on ending her career with a bang—a 600-person (gang) bang, to be precise. Tickets, which are $30 and include a signed copy of the book, are available in advance and at the door, if space is available.
Wednesday, June 4: Air-Guitar Championship
Who said you need an actual guitar to rock? Okay, it might have been us, but watching last year’s winner William Ocean own the stage made us believers. The US Air Guitar Championships start this month with regional competitions in 21 cities. Head to the 9:30 Club (815 V St., NW; 202-265-0930) to see the area’s best performers. Tickets are $15. 7:30 PM.
Thursday, June 5: Closing Time
Set in a dilapidated Belfast pub, Closing Time by Owen McCafferty follows five characters who turn to the watering hole as an escape from the reality happening outside the walls of the bar. The Keegan Theatre production is at Theatre on the Run (3700 Four Mile Run Dr., Arlington; 703-892-0202). Tickets are $20. 8 PM.
Friday, June 6: Thao Nguyen at the 9:30 Club
Missed out on our interview with local musician Thao Nguyen? Now’s your chance to see what we and everyone else is raving about. Thao and her band, the Get Down Stay Down, are opening Rilo Kiley’s show at the 9:30 Club (815 V St., NW; 202-265-0930). The show is sold out, but there are still plenty of reasonable offers like this one and this one on Craigslist.
