Where & When Weekly

Looking to find exciting events going on around town during the week? Check out our picks for what we think are the best bets out there.

Monday, Feb. 5: Our very own Drew Bratcher sacrificed a Friday night in the bitter cold to get his hands on tickets for indie folk hero Sufjan Steven's show this evening. But if you weren't so lucky, or quite so dedicated, you might be able to satisfy yourself with Sufjan via video. He and the other acts who are performing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage will be broadcast in the Grand Foyer. The events start at 6 p.m.; Sufjan goes on at 9 p.m. Additionally, you can also watch the program via webcast here.

If catching a musical act on video isn't exactly your thing, you can head out to Silver Spring for some comfort food. Following in the footsteps of DC and Bethesda, Silver Spring starts its very own Restaurant Week tonight. It runs through the 11th. Get details and participating restaurants here.

Tuesday, Feb. 6: Valentine's Day is coming up, and you don't want to be caught shorthanded in front of your sweetheart. So to help you find the way to their heart (through their tastebuds, of course), sign up for Warren Brown's Cakelove romantic recipe class. The class, held at Cakelove's Silver Spring location, will focus on the basic but delicious flavors of vanilla and chocolate. 6:30 p.m. $100. Call (301) 565-2253 for reservations and more info.

For those who aren't sweets fans, beer can be just the ticket. And you'll be able to find plenty of it tonight at the Brooklyn Brewery Dinner at EatBar in Arlington (2761 Washington Boulevard). Brooklyn Brewery's Brewmaster will be on hand to discuss the art of pairing beer with food, and you'll get to nibble on a menu created for the occasion. The cost for the night is $90. Call (703) 224-5051 for information.

Wednesday, Feb. 7: In honor of their new exhibition, "Red," the Textile Museum hosts a pre-Valentine's fest. At the evening's celebrations you can tour the exhibit, which focuses on textiles of the crimson variety, listen to harps playing, and make your own Valentine's out of cloth. A portion of the proceeds go to the Whitman-Walker Clinic. 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. $12. (202) 667-0441.

Thursday, Feb. 8: To get your Valentine something unique this year, head on over to the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, where they'll be hosting Heart Art. The event features dance performances and lessons by Generations Dance Studio, and you can browse studios for artist-made Valentines and gifts. 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. (703) 838-4565.

If Thursday for you is more about the end of the work week, you might enjoy the Office Space Movie Festival at Arlington Cinema N' Drafthouse tonight. There'll be a DJ, movie trivia contests — even a contest to see who can do the best Bill Lumbergh impersonation. If you're really in the spirit, you can dress as an Office Space character and get a 2 for 1 movie pass. $7. 7 p.m.
