Turkey to Go: Where to Buy Take-Out Thanksgiving Dinners

Worried about how you’re going to pull that Thanksgiving meal together by November 26? Luckily, there’s lots of ways to get a takeout turkey-day dinner so you don’t have to lift a finger in the kitchen. When ordering a turkey, keep in mind that a ten-to-12 pound turkey will feed four to six people.

Dean & DeLuca (3276 M St., NW; 202-342-2500).
The Georgetown location of this national chain has options for every course. Appetizers, sold by the dozen, include truffle-scented risotto cakes with wild mushrooms ($36), classic shrimp cocktail ($36), and miniature crabcakes ($33). Soups, which are served by the quart, are butternut-squash with toasted hazelnuts and sage ($12) and lobster bisque scented with cognac ($15). There’s lots of turkey options: an oven-roasted heritage ($12/pound) or Amish breed ($8/pound), roasted turkey breast with fresh herbs ($18/pound), and a raw heritage bird that comes seasoned with roasting instructions ($11/pound). Other main-course options are beef tenderloin with forest mushrooms ($36/pound) and Berkshire ham with a pineapple/mustard glaze ($16/pound). Vegetables and sides, sold by the pound, include mashed potatoes ($10); haricots vert with salted almonds ($10); roasted baby carrots, Brussels sprouts, and pearl onions ($10); and mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar and maple syrup ($10). The minimum order for side dishes is two pounds. Bread comes by the dozen and includes brioche rolls ($12), cranberry-pecan rolls ($12), and cream-cheese biscuits ($12). Sauce and accompaniments, which come in quart-size servings, include turkey pan gravy ($12), Madeira/mushroom gravy ($15), and sun-dried-cranberry-and-port chutney ($12). For stuffing, sold by the pound with a two-pound minimum, the store has sage-and-celery stuffing ($8), cornbread with Andouille sausage ($10), and spoon bread with cheddar cheese ($8). There’s an assortment of pies—classic pecan, sweet-potato, apple, and pumpkin—for $27. Orders must be placed by 4 PM on November 23, and pickup is on Thanksgiving from 8 to noon.

Fairmont, Washington, D.C. (2401 M St., NW; 202-429-2400).
This hotel, in DC’s West End, is offering full dinners. A meal for ten ($240) includes an herb-roasted free-range turkey; bread stuffing; sage-scented pan gravy; buttermilk mashed potatoes; maple-roasted sweet potatoes; sautéed baby vegetables; green-bean almandine; Parker House rolls; and homemade apple, pumpkin, or pecan pie. The dinner will come with reheating instructions. All orders must be placed before November 23, and pickup is on Thanksgiving from 8 to 2.

Fyve Restaurant Lounge (1250 S. Hayes St., Arlington; 703-415-5000).
This American restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, is offering Thanksgiving meals that feed six. The dinner comes with either an apple-cider-glazed turkey ($225) with cranberry chutney; or prime rib ($245) crusted with sea salt, peppercorns, and rosemary, with a horseradish sauce. Both options include roasted-pumpkin bisque; green salad with goat cheese, candied walnuts, cranberries, and shallot dressing; apple/herb cornbread stuffing; Yukon-gold mashed potatoes; country gravy; maple-and-ginger-glazed yams; caramelized root vegetables; and fresh-baked dinner rolls. Choose a pumpkin, pecan, or apple-cranberry pie for dessert; additional pies are $20. You can also purchase an extra turkey ($75) or prime rib ($99). All orders must be placed by noon on November 20, and pick-up is on Thanksgiving from 9 to 3.

Magnolias at the Mill (198 N. 21st St., Purcellville; 540-338-9800).
This Loudoun County restaurant has Thanksgiving dinners for six ($145) or 12 ($275). The meals include a roasted turkey with corn bread stuffing, romaine salad with Parmesan-peppercorn dressing, fresh-basked foccacia, green-bean casserole, whipped potatoes, turkey gravy, sweet-potato streusel, orange-cranberry sauce, and pumpkin or pecan pie. Extras include loaves of foccacia ($3.50), a green-bean casserole ($15), cornbread stuffing ($15), whipped potatoes ($15), sweet potatoes ($15), romaine salad ($15), cranberry sauce ($7.50), gravy ($10), pecan or pumpkin pie ($14). Wines are also available for purchase; the list includes Clarksburg White Knight Viognier ($12), the Pines 1852 Satin ($20), Okanagan Pinot Noir ($24), and Penfolds Shiraz/Cab ($12). Orders, which can be made online or by phone, should be in by November 21 and can be picked up on Thanksgiving morning from 10 to noon.

Magruder’s (981 Rollins Ave., Rockville; 301-230-3000).
This neighborhood grocer has turkey dinners for six to eight ($49.99) or 12 to 16 ($89.99). They include an oven-roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, home-style stuffing, gravy, cranberry-orange relish, pumpkin pie, and soft dinner rolls. For customers who prefer a spiral-baked ham in place of turkey, there’s a dinner for six to eight ($59.99) that also includes green-bean casserole, mashed sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing, turkey gravy, apple pie, and soft dinner rolls. Orders must be made by November 23 and can be picked up one business day after you place it. Pick-up times are 9 AM to 8 PM, except on Thanksgiving Day, when orders should be picked up from 9 to 1.

Open Kitchen (7115 Leesburg Pike, #107, Falls Church; 703-942-8148).
This bistro/catering company/cooking school has full meals, which include the choice of an oven-ready turkey—which comes in a disposable roasting pan—or a cooked and carved turkey. Kosher turkeys are available for an additional $5 per person. The “traditional” Thanksgiving meal ($40/person) includes house-made gravy; sage stuffing; fennel mashed potatoes; frisée salad with endives, toasted walnuts, and Brussels sprouts; cranberry relish; and fresh-baked rolls. You can also pick two sides from the following: mashed parsnips and carrots; wild rice with bulgur and braised vegetables; roasted butternut squash with rosemary and shallots; maple-roasted seasonal vegetables; red-beet carpaccio; and caramelized onions and potatoes with pearl onions, mushrooms, and asparagus. Extra side orders are available for $5 per person. For dessert, choose a pumpkin or apple pie. The “exceptional” Thanksgiving meal ($50 per person) comes with a pancetta-wrapped roasted turkey with house-made gravy; fennel mashed potatoes; green beans and chestnuts tossed in a date vinaigrette; cranberry relish; two sides; and dinner rolls. For dessert, the options are sweet-potato or pecan pie. Appetizers, which are extra, include Thai-turkey-and-coconut soup ($6/person); miniature crabcakes with mustard/mayonnaise sauce ($8/person); Italian turkey sausage stuffed mushrooms ($5/person); and chimichurri meatballs ($6/person). Punk’s Backyard Grill (2188 Annapolis Mall, Annapolis; 410-571-7744).
This casual Annapolis restaurant is offering appetizers and dessert. Starters are a mixed-green salad with applewood-smoked bacon, candied pumpkin seeds, green apples, and gorgonzola, tossed with apple-cider vinaigrette ($39 for a half pan that serves five; $75 for a full pan); and butternut-squash-and-root-vegetable bisque or smoky black-bean soup ($12.49 for a 32-ounce container that serves four to six). For dessert, there’s pies, which serve six to eight people; options include apple-crumb ($3.49/slice, $17.99/whole), pumpkin ($2.99/slice, $11.99/whole), key-lime ($2.99/slice, $11.99/whole), and pecan ($17.99/whole). There’s also pumpkin bread pudding ($3.59/slice, $14.99/whole) and strawberry/rhubarb cobbler ($17.99). Orders must be made by November 24, and pick up is November 25 from 11 to 9.

Rocklands Barbeque & Grilling Company (multiple locations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia).
Rocklands’ Thanksgiving menu is available both for pickup and delivery. Choose from fresh-smoked turkeys, which range from ten to 12 pounds ($44.99), 14 to 16 pounds ($64.99), or 18 to 20 pounds ($84.99). Other main dishes include a smoked turkey breast with homemade gravy ($8.99 per pound), a grilled rack of lamb that serves two to four ($39.99), a grilled whole tenderloin of beef ($25.99 per pound), or a whole smoked ham for 15 to 20 ($69.99). Sides, sold by the quart, include cornbread stuffing with sage ($8.99), Southern-style green beans ($8.99), bacon-and-chive mashed potatoes ($8.99), wild rice with grapes and walnuts ($8.99), and ginger candied baby carrots ($8.99). You can also get a dozen miniature cornbread muffins with jalapeño or pumpkin ($5). Desserts are double-fudge cheesecake brownies ($1.75 each) and fresh-baked pecan, apple, and pumpkin pies ($13.99). This Leesburg restaurant has Thanksgiving dinners for six ($145) and 12 ($275). They come with fresh-baked ciabatta bread; Caesar salad; sausage/sage stuffing; whipped potatoes; green beans with almonds; glazed carrots; turkey gravy; cranberry sauce; and pumpkin, apple, or pecan pie. Extras include ciabatta bread ($3.50/loaf), Caesar salad ($15 for six), green beans ($15 for 3½ pounds), glazed carrots ($15 for 3½ pounds), cranberry sauce ($7.50 for one pint), sausage stuffing ($15 for 2½ pounds), whipped potatoes ($15 for 2½ pounds), gravy ($10 for one quart), pumpkin pie ($12.50), and pecan or apple pie ($15). Wines for purchase are Nepenthe Tryst ($13), Tegernseerhoff Zweigelt rosé ($15), and Legado Munoz tempranillo ($13). Zola Wine & Kitchen

This wine store and cooking school is offering such starters as a half-gallon of butternut-squash ($15) or mushroom-and-Brie soup ($20); baby-spinach salad ($28, serves eight); vegetables with pimento-cheese dip ($35, feeds six); and shrimp cocktail ($69 for 36 shrimp). Turkeys, which feed six to eight, come uncooked ($79)— with a roasting pan, herbs, mirepoix, and spice blend—and cooked ($99) with reheating instructions. Side dishes, which come in two-pound portions, are  sweet-potato wedges, caramelized with brown sugar, orange honey, and orange juice ($12); olive-oil-braised fingerling potatoes ($17); house-made cornbread stuffing ($16); oyster dressing ($24); brioche stuffing ($14s); green beans with onion straws ($14); mushrooms and onions ($19); honey-glazed carrots ($17); apple-and-bacon-braised kale ($14); roast butternut squash ($15); creamed spinach ($19); and baked Yukon potatoes mashed with cream and butter ($15 for three pounds). Other options include a pint of cranberry relish ($7); three pounds of corn spoonbread ($18); and three pounds of blue-cheese Rutabaga mash ($13). To buy a whole meal, choose between an herb-roasted turkey breast ($119), a whole 12- to 14-pound herb-roasted turkey ($129), or a 12- to 14-pound oven-ready herbed turkey ($149). The meal also includes five sides, corn muffins or honey-wheat rolls, and pumpkin or apple pie. Co Co. Sala (929 F St., NW; 202-347-4265).
This chocolate lounge in DC’s Penn Quarter has a host of desserts for pre-order. Pies, which serve about six people, include triple-chocolate-and-pecan ($22), maple-pumpkin ($18), and caramelized-apple-and-cinnamon cheesecake ($22). Sweet bars come with a variety of fillings, including chocolate, peanut-butter cream, salted caramel, and crispy rice ($6 each); white chocolate, cranberry, candied orange, and pretzel sticks ($6); chocolate/pumpkin truffle cream, habanero crunch, and cinnamon bits ($6); and pumpkin-spice/chocolate-truffle ($5). There’s also caramel-chocolate-and-pecan baby apples ($4), chocolate-and-pumpkin-seed bark ($5), chocolate-turkey place-card holders ($4), chocolate squirrels ($10), and a large chocolate acorn ($12). For a selection, there’s the Co Co. Sala dessert buffet ($115) with one triple-chocolate-and-pecan pie, one maple-pumpkin pie, one caramelized-apple-and-cinnamon cheesecake, four chocolate-and-pumpkin-seed barks, four caramel-chocolate-and-pecan baby apples, and four chocolate-turkey place-card holders. Orders must be placed by November 23, and pickup is November 25 from 11 to 5.

Fancy Cakes by Leslie (4939 Elm St,, Bethesda; 301-652-9390).
This bakery has a number of cupcakes for Thanksgiving, including pumpkin with cream-cheese frosting ($3.25 each), cranberry with cranberry frosting ($3.25), pumpkin-cheesecake ($3.75), and plain cheesecake with cranberry topping ($3.75). There’s also double-ginger/chocolate-chip cookies ($2.25); and nine-inch pumpkin ($23) and pecan pies ($24). For cupcake and pies, you can pick up your order 48 hours after placing it; hours are Monday through Thursday 10 to 9, Friday and Saturday 10 to 10, Sunday noon to 6. Georgetown Cupcake (1209 Potomac St., NW; 202-333-8448).
Georgetown Cupcake will deliver a box of 12 cupcakes ($29)—six pumpkin-spice, six chocolate hazelnut—for the holiday.
