“Somewhere You Want to Be”

The owners of this house in DC’s Palisades neighborhood wanted rooms but not walls. Kube Architecture responded with screens—wood and steel in the courtyard, translucent throughout the inside.

The spaces were also connected visually with bamboo floors, environmentally friendly paints, and built-in storage and play areas of recycled materials. “It has industrial details yet maintains a warm residential feel,” the jury said. “This has a contemporary scale that feels like somewhere you want to be.”

The contractor was DMI Development Group of Silver Spring.
