Would SOMEONE please consider opening a place to even GET cupcakes in the Rockville area??? Investors, please listen - we NEED this! You will be busy, you will make money, give us a decent cupcake we won’t have to drive downtown to get!

Rivka,
Nam Viet is better then Four Sisters. Take it from someone who is Vietnamese. Not only that there are plenty of places better then both.

Perhaps the popularity of chains has increased because they are potentially more affordable and predictable than non-chain restaurants. I, for one whole heartedly prefer and seek out locally owned restaurants, etc.

I am surprised that Sushi-Ko is so well regarded among Washingtonians. I had the worst sushi there. I had really high hopes after reading reviews. The sushi both my date and I had could be equated to what you would pick up at Harris Teeter (awful).

How in the world did einstein’s bagels make the top spot? The bagels are barely the size of my palm. Please go to Brooklyn Bagels in Arlington for some real bagels.

Agreed. Really sad to see so many chains on here. People need to get out of their little bubbles and discover all the wonderful area gems they’re missing.

How in the world would you know if those voting for the chains are from Maryland and Virginia. What a friggin’ elitist! I guess all of those people in DC, with their wonderful school system and murder rate, are so much more knowledgeable in the art of cuisine. While my favorite restaurants are not chains either and I kind of groan when I see Five Guys on the list of best comfort food (yuck!), Washingtonian is asking for reader favorites which is what they are reporting on. Maybe Joe should start a new magazine "Elitist Washington" so he can report on all of the hoity-toity crap till his face turns blue (like his blood, I’m sure.)

pls don’t hate on virginians...i’m a VA girl and agree that chains should not be on the list!

People in NOVA and Maryland shouldn’t even be allowed to vote for in the best of. That’s how we get chains in here!

People honestly believe Silver Diner is the best diner in the area?! How?! Try Barnside Diner in Alexandria if you want good, cheap diner food. They’re open 24/7 and their food is fantastic... for a diner. Also, Cake Love?? Not feeling the love for that place. How’s about Hello Cupcake or Red Velvet Cupcakery? Both are clearly superior to Hello Cupcake’s boring, bland flavors.

let’s see...how many franchises/chain/huge corporations can be in our "Best of DC" list? Most of these answers would apply anywhere in America, showing again how bland DC can be or maybe how few choices there are in certain categories (when Chipotle and CalTort are the favorite burrito spots, for example). And I totally agree with the cupcake problem. CakeLove’s cupcakes are inedible. GTown cupcakes are too small and the cake tastes like it came from a box. Baked & Wired and Hello Cupcake both are better by leaps and bounds.

Oy. If anything, this list shows that DCers don’t bother to explore restaurants outside the two-block radius of their neighborhood. Nam Viet better than Four Sisters? Yea, right. Best onion soup is at Panera or Mon Ami Gabi? Are you kidding? And none of Tara Thai, Sala Thai and Thaiphoon are remotely decent. What about Rice? People clearly need to get out and see what they’re missing.

Posted by: Rivka, Jun 29, 2009 07:38:07 AM

Cake Love’s cupcakes are ridiculously overrated - really dry and the icing tastes like you’re eating a stick of butter. I am really surprised Hello Cupcake didn’t make the cut at all - Would have ranked it as 1. Georgetown Cupcake 2. Baked and Wired and 3. Hello Cupcake.

How in the WORLD did Cake Love make the #2 cupcake on the list? It must just be because they have more locations and more people have tried them. Anyone who did a taste test between Baked & Wired and Cake Love would select Baked & Wired as the clear winner.
