The New Guard: Joseph Boardman

Joseph Boardman

President and CEO, Amtrak

As CEO of the nation’s government-owned rail company, Joseph Boardman is trying to get passengers up the East Coast faster, championing a $151-billion proposal to turn Amtrak’s Northeast routes into a high-speed rail network. The plan would create six additional tracks under Union Station for trains that can hit top speeds of 220 miles an hour. Amtrak hopes to finish by 2030.

Although getting funding for the initiative will be slow going, if Amtrak succeeds, trips will be anything but: Passengers will be able to zip from DC to New York City in 94 minutes and to Philadelphia in 54.
