Dream Weekends: Swann House
A romantic hideaway.

Swann House has been called one of America's most romantic inns. Surprise--it's right in DC's Dupont Circle. The 1883 mansion resembles a small castle. Behind the brick turrets you'll find featherbeds, crystal chandeliers, fireplaces, soaking tubs, and, in warmer weather, a swimming pool. Afternoon tea and sherry add to the enjoyment, as do 450-thread-count sheets. You can explore the neighborhood, with its good restaurants, clubs, and shops and the intimate Phillips Collection--or justrelax. Innkeeper Rick Verkler offers romantic extras (for a fee), ranging from flowers and Champagne to an in-room massage for two. Arranging unique proposals is a speciality. "Deluxe continental" breakfast is serve-yourself and hearty; an entrée is added on weekends. Bottom line: Getting away from it all doesn't have to mean traveling far. Swann House, 202-265-4414; swannhouse.com. Rooms: $150 to $325 with breakfast and afternoon refreshments.
